Scholarship Overview:
The Brenda V. Johnson Scholarship is established to honor the legacy of Brenda V. Johnson, a woman of God who has dedicated her life to nurturing the potential of others. This scholarship aims to support students who demonstrate a commitment to personal growth, leadership, and community development.
Scholarship Overview:
- Demographics:
- Must identify as a Black/African American woman.
- Educational Requirements:
- High school senior or undergraduate student.
- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.
- Must be accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Field of Study :
- Preference for students pursuing Education, Theology, Social Work, or related fields
- Community Involvement & Leadership:
- Must demonstrate a commitment to community service, leadership, or mentorship.
- Financial Need
- Preference for students with financial need Application Requirements:
- Personal Statement (500-750 words) on one of the following topics:
- How have faith, education, and mentorship shaped your life and future goals?
- Describe a time you made an impact in your community and how you plan to continue this work.
Brenda V. Johnson is an anointed woman of God who has accepted the higher calling of God on her life. She has dedicated her life to the development and cultivation of others so that they may reach their God-given potential.
Her academic achievements include a B.S degree in Education from Boston University, Boston, MA; a M.S. degree in Education/Reading from Hunter College, NY, NY and certification in Administration and Supervision from Queens College, Queens, NY.
She has served as an elementary school teacher, teacher trainer, assistant principal, supervisor of teachers and church administrator. She currently serves as Dean of Education in the Uganda Jurisdiction for Dr. Herldeen Russell School of Ministries and Primary School.
Fine Arts Scholarship
Carolyn D. DeVore
Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
Scholarship Overview:
The Carolyn D. DeVore Fine Arts Scholarship honors the legacy of Carolyn DeVore, a visionary leader in dance education and artistic empowerment. This scholarship supports undergraduate students who are passionate about the arts whether in dance, music, theater, or visual arts and who demonstrate a commitment to using their talents to inspire and uplift their communities.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be considered for the Carolyn D. DeVore Fine Arts Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Undergraduate Enrollment: Must be a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university.
- Field of Study: Open to students pursuing a degree in Dance, Theater, Music, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, or Arts Education.
- Academic Performance: Must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.
- Artistic Excellence: Must showcase a strong passion for the arts through performance, production, or community engagement.
- Community Engagement: Demonstrated involvement in arts based mentorship, teaching, or community outreach programs.
Portfolio or Performance Submission: A video (3 minutes) of a dance, music, or theater performance OR a portfolio of visual art pieces (if applicable).
ApplyIn 2007, her unwavering commitment led to the inauguration of a state-of-the-art dance studio, providing an inspiring space for her team and students.
Ms. DeVore’s leadership is complemented by a creative team of dancers, drummers, and administrative staff, all dedicated to fostering a nurturing and disciplined environment for artistic growth.
Beyond her work at the dance center, Ms. DeVore serves as the director of the nonprofit organization Rise Up: Empowerment Through the Arts, which strives to educate, inspire, and empower young people through the arts.
Her influence extends to her students’ achievements, with several opening their own studios and others receiving prestigious nominations, such as Camille A. Brown’s 2024 Grammy nomination for the musical Hell’s Kitchen and Edgar Gardino’s win as associate choreographer for “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.”
Ms. DeVore’s enduring legacy is marked by her passion for dance, commitment to education, and the profound impact she has had on the cultural enrichment of her community.
Medical & Community Service Scholarship
Dr. Adrienne Thomas

Scholarship Overview:
The Dr. Adrienne L. Thomas Medical & Community Service Scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. Thomas, a dedicated obstetrician-gynecologist, educator, and community leader. This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate & graduate women who demonstrate a strong commitment to healthcare, public service, and community impact.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be considered for the Dr. Adrienne L. Thomas Medical & Community Service Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Open to Biology & PreMed majors: preferred they have a demonstrated interest in community health, patient advocacy, or public service.
- Academic Performance: Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Community & Leadership Involvement: Demonstrated commitment to health-related community service, medical volunteer work, patient education, or leadership in public service initiatives.
- Personal Statement (500-750 words): Describe your commitment to public service, healthcare, or community advocacy, your career aspirations, and how you plan to make a lasting impact in your community.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
Scholarship Overview:
The Marjorie Fleming Simon Community Service and Public Health Scholarship is established to honor the legacy of Marjorie Fleming Simon, who devoted her career to public health, community service, and improving wellness in underserved populations. This scholarship supports women pursuing a STEM major related to public health, including but not limited to nursing, biomedical sciences, health technology, and environmental health, with a particular focus on leadership and community impact in the health sector.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be considered for the Marjorie Fleming Simon Community Service and Public Health Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Open to women currently enrolled as full time undergraduate students at an accredited college or university.
- Field of Study:
- This scholarship is designed for students pursuing a STEM-related major with a focus on health, such as:
- Nursing
- Biomedical Sciences
- Public Health
- Health Technology
- Environmental Health
- Medical Laboratory Science
- Students in other STEM fields who have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service or public health are also encouraged to apply.
- This scholarship is designed for students pursuing a STEM-related major with a focus on health, such as:
- Academic Excellence:
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, reflecting their ability to excel in both their STEM coursework and community involvement.
- Community Service & Leadership:
- Applicants should have a demonstrated history of community service, particularly in areas related to health, wellness, or public health.
- Personal essay (500-750 words) explaining the applicant’s commitment to public health, community service, or their future goals in a STEM-related health field.
Marjorie Fleming Simon, the daughter of the of the late Catherine Fleming and Jesse Watts, was born and raised in Port Washington, N.Y. Marjorie was baptized at an early age and has served faithfully at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Port Washington for over 50 years. Presently she serves as a Trustee and Missionary. She has been part of the Eastern Baptist Association for many of those years, participating in the spelling bee as a child. Her joy of singing paved the way for her to be a part of several singing groups.
She attended St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School and Port Washington Public Schools. She participated in many activities including sports, yearbook committee, future business and nurses’ clubs. After graduation, she enrolled in Bellevue School of Nursing and received her nursing diploma. She furthered her studies in nursing and public health at Hunter College and Molloy College. In later years, she attended New Your Theological Seminary where she received a certificate in biblical studies.
Marjorie was employed by Bellevue Hospital as Head Nurse for five years. She left Bellevue and joined Nassau County Department of Health, her dream, and remained in public health for 33 years. As the Clinic Manage at the New Cassel Westbury Health Center, she offered evening workshops on issues affecting the community such as hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis, women’s health and teen pregnancy. Since retiring she has continued to follow her dream, doing mission work in Africa, and Jamaica, WI. Her service in public health continued as a past board member of Good Beginnings for Babies, former board member of New Cassel/Westbury Community Health Center, member of UNCCRC, Global Associates for Health Development and participating in local health fairs.
She is a proud life member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club (NANBPWC), Bellevue Alumnae Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Chi Eta Phi Sorority, African Atlantic Genealogical Society (AAGS) and Common Grounds (NYSDOH-AIDS Institute Faith Communities Project).

Marjorie’s greatest blessings and achievement is the raising of her four children to love and honor God. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). She is the loving mother of Yvette, Oslo (deceased), Ana and Cyril. As the grandmother of Jabari, Shomari, Aniya, Jada, Arianna, the pride and joy of motherhood continues to live on. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
